Granular Gas of Viscoelastic Particles in a Homogeneous Cooling State

چکیده
Kinetic properties of a granular gas of viscoelastic particles in a homogeneous cooling state are studied analytically and numerically. We employ the most recent expression for the velocity-dependent restitution coefficient for colliding viscoelastic particles, which allows to describe systems with large inelasticity. In contrast to previous studies, the third coefficient a3 of the Sonine polynomials expansion of the velocity distribution function is taken into account. We observe a complicated evolution of this coefficient. Moreover, we find that a3 is always of the same order of magnitude as the leading second Sonine coefficient a2; this contradicts the existing hypothesis that the subsequent Sonine coefficients a2, a3 . . ., are of an ascending order of a small parameter, characterizing particles inelasticity. We analyze evolution of the high-energy tail of the velocity distribution function. In particular, we study the time dependence of the tail amplitude and of the threshold velocity, which demarcates the main part of the velocity distribution and the ∗Corresponding author Email address: [email protected] (A. We also study evolution of the self-diffusion coefficient D and explore the impact of the third Sonine coefficient on the self-diffusion. Our analytical predictions for the third Sonine coefficient, threshold velocity and the self-diffusion coefficient are in a good agreement with the numerical finding.

We investigate the evolution of the velocity distribution function of a granular gas composed of viscoelastic particles in the homogeneous cooling state, i.e. before clustering occurs. The deviation of the velocity distribution function from the Maxwellian distribution is quantified by a Sonine polynomials expansion. The first non-vanishing Sonine coefficient a2(t), reveals a complex time depen...

We consider collisional models for granular particles and analyze the conditions under which the restitution coefficient might be a constant. We show that these conditions are not consistent with known collision laws. From the generalization of the Hertz contact law for viscoelastic particles we obtain the coefficient of normal restitution ǫ as a function of the normal component of the impact v...

The decay of temperature of a force-free granular gas in the homogeneous cooling state depends on the specific model for particle interaction. For the case of rough spheres, in recent experimental and theoretical work, the coefficient of restitution was characterized as a fluctuating quantity. We show that for such particles, the decay of temperature with time follows the law T ∼ t−/29 which de...

Abstract. In most of the literature on granular gases it is assumed that the restitution coefficient ǫ, which quantifies the loss of kinetic energy upon a collision is independent on the impact velocity. Experiments as well as theoretical investigations show, however, that for real materials the restitution coefficient depends significantly on the impact velocity. We consider the diffusion proc...

Free cooling of a gas of inelastically colliding hard spheres represents a central paradigm of kinetic theory of granular gases. At zero gravity the temperature of a freely cooling homogeneous granular gas follows a power law in time. How does gravity, which brings inhomogeneity, affect the cooling? We combine molecular dynamics simulations, a numerical solution of hydrodynamic equations and an...
